Date: 1 July 2017
Speaker: Prof. Mariano Sanz
Professor and Chair of Periodontology, Department of Stomatology III, Faculty of Odontology, University Complutense, Madrid, Spain
The first half focuses on the topic of lateral bone augmentation in combination with implant placement. A recent systematic review reported that guided bone regeneration using bone replacement grafts and barrier membranes is the most efficient method for bone augmentation with simultaneous implant placement. Although different biomaterials have been used as bone replacement grafts, evidence supports the use of xenogeneic hydroxyapatite due to its osteoconductivity and slow resorption rate. This presentation will discuss different surgical protocols and critical factors involved in successful bone regeneration leading to improved outcomes in implant dentistry.
The second half is a hands-on workshop that aims to expose clinicians to soft tissue plastic techniques. Two surgical indications, namely soft tissue augmentation techniques for increasing the width of keratinised tissue and root coverage procedures for managing localized gingival/mucosal recession defects, will be discussed through case presentations. Participants will also perform these surgical techniques using autogenous connective tissue grafts and soft tissue substitutes (collagen matrices) on a pig mandible model in this workshop.
