All dentists in Singapore should be able to treat gum disease. However, gum disease presents in different severities and complexities. Persistent gingivitis, uncommon presentations of gum disease and more severe forms of periodontitis may be managed more effectively by a dentist who has gone through further training in the specialty of periodontology or periodontics. Some can be registered gum specialists, also known as periodontists. All ordinary members of the Society of Periodontology (Singapore) have received recognized specialty training in periodontology/periodontics and are fully qualified to detect, diagnose and treat gum disease.
